10:00 - Introduction to IP

Parminder Lally, Patent Attorney at Appleyard Lees, will provide an introduction to the different types of intellectual property (IP), and the value IP adds to a business.

Parminder has an MSci in Physics from Imperial College London, and a PhD in Physics from the University of Oxford.

10:30 - Why should a business protect its innovation?

David Nugent, Director of Elucidare Limited and co-founder of quaudio and Colorifix, will speak about why early stage companies should protect their innovation as part of their commercialisation strategy.

David has a BEng in Physics and Electronic Engineering from the University of Glasgow, and a PhD in Engineering and Physics from the University of Cambridge.

11:00 - Using IP to make deals and fight competition

Chris Clarke, Patent Attorney at Vectura. Vectura is an industry-leading inhaled airways disease-focussed business, with an R&D site in Cambridge. In 2018, nine million patients used products that utilised Vectura’s intellectual property. Chris will discuss how Vectura uses their IP to negotiate with other players in the market.

Chris has a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Polymer Physics from the University of Cambridge.

11:30 - Commercialising your research at University

Olivia Nicoletti, Commercialisation Manager at Cambridge Enterprise, will explain how the organisation helps the University of Cambridge’s researchers and academics to commercialise their ideas for the benefit of society worldwide. Olivia helps to commercial technologies from across the physical sciences, with a particular interest in optics and quantum technologies.

Olivia has a MSc in Physics from the University of Milan and a PhD from the University of Cambridge in nano-optics and plasmonics.

12:00 - Panel discussion/Q&A

Richard Bray, Partner at Appleyard Lees, will lead a lively panel discussion and bust some of the myths about IP along the way.

Richard has a MPhys degree in Physics from the University of Bath. Richard is a Member of the Business Innovation and Growth Steering Group of the IoP, and judges the IoP Business Innovation and Start-Up Awards.
